I already have a few volunteering experiences on my CV, but they are exclusively in connection with art and film events, and I think it would be worthwhile to offer my time to an environmental cause. I have been doing a bit of research:
Trees for Life offer work weeks dedicated to the restoration of the Caledonian forest, near Inverness. Including train fare, this would cost me around £100.
WWOOF encourage interested folk to volunteer on an organic farm, in exchange for accommodation and food. They also have opportunities abroad, including Spain.
Locally, there are plenty of projects who need volunteers. One example is Greenstreets, a student-led scheme that aims to minimise the potentially re-usable debris that the outgoing students leave behind at the end of the academic year. Said waste is collected, or donated, then sent to the 'free shop', or distributed to various necessitous charities.
Oblong are a community resource centre for people trying to make a difference through volunteering and community projects. They offer their own volunteer placements, including creative roles. A while ago I was in contact with one of their web designers, so I have a good idea of what Oblong does.
BTCV Leeds, based in Kirkstall, have a number of conservation based volunteer projects.
I do also need to find a new paid job quite soon, or I will be living in penury.
